Volunteer Spotlight: Aimee & Donna

Volunteer Spotlight: Aimee & Donna

At Pottstown Beacon of Hope (PBOH), volunteers are the heart of our mission, bringing warmth, kindness, and dedication to those in need. This month, we are excited to highlight two incredible volunteers, Aimee and Donna, whose teamwork and compassion have made a meaningful impact since they began volunteering in the fall of 2022.

Answering the Call to Serve Aimee and Donna met through a small Bible study group, where their shared faith inspired them to put their beliefs into action. When they learned about PBOH, they were drawn to its mission of supporting the local community, especially those facing hunger and homelessness. They initially signed up to serve coffee and food on Monday mornings but quickly discovered another way to help—cleaning guest bins and refreshing bedding to ensure a clean, comfortable space each week. Their dedication extends beyond Mondays, as their Bible study group also prepares and serves dinner for guests once a month.

"Through our volunteer work at PBOH, we see firsthand that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference. We hope that providing a clean, fresh resting place for our guests helps them face the next day with a little more inspiration."

A Rewarding Experience For Aimee and Donna, the best part of volunteering at PBOH is the opportunity to interact with guests and collaborate with fellow volunteers. The simple act of offering a warm meal or a clean bed brings them joy, knowing that they are helping to create a welcoming, home-like atmosphere.

"As Christians, we view it as a privilege to assist someone less fortunate. After all, what are we all here for if not for each other?"

Breaking Misconceptions One thing Aimee and Donna wish more people knew about the unhoused community is just how humble and grateful PBOH guests are—not only for the meals and assistance but for the chance to rebuild their lives. They have witnessed the power of PBOH’s programs in helping individuals regain their stability, and they feel honored to contribute to such a meaningful cause.

Beyond Volunteering When they aren’t at PBOH, Donna and Aimee lead full and fascinating lives. Donna, a retired nurse, is an active member of St. Aloysius Church, where she serves as a cantor. She enjoys yoga, reading, international cuisine, and cheering on the Eagles and Phillies. Fun fact—she also played basketball for over a decade, including two years at the collegiate level! Aimee, a professional development specialist and former elementary school teacher, is passionate about coaching educators and writing curriculum. She loves to read, write, travel, and spend time with her husband and three adult children. A little-known fact about Aimee? She lived in Japan as a child and attended school there—an experience she cherishes to this day!

Words of Wisdom When asked what advice they would give to their younger selves, Donna and Aimee shared thoughtful insights:

  • Donna: "Ask God’s guidance in all decisions and in any situation, choose to respond rather than react."

  • Aimee: "Slow down, enjoy each moment, and live life with gratitude."

After a long day, you can find Donna unwinding with a glass of wine and music alongside her husband, Dave, while Aimee prefers to relax with a good book and her husband, Joe.

We are incredibly grateful for Aimee and Donna’s kindness, dedication, and faith in action. Their work at PBOH is a true testament to the power of service and community. Thank you, Aimee and Donna, for being a shining light for our guests!
