Preparing for Code Blue: Getting Ready to Welcome Guests This Winter
As temperatures drop and the community braces for another cold winter, the Pottstown Beacon of Hope (PBoH) team is preparing to open our Code Blue Shelter. This week, our staff is moving supplies to our generous host church, and completing their annual trainings to ensure we’re ready to serve our guests safely and compassionately.
This year, our operations will look a little different. Instead of being open every night, we will activate our overnight shelter only when Montgomery County declares a Code Blue — meaning temperatures are dangerously low and unsheltered residents are at serious risk. Guests, volunteers, and staff will receive daily updates on Code Blue status to stay informed.
On Code Blue nights, PBoH will provide:
Transportation to the warming center once a Code Blue is declared
Warm meals, including dinner and breakfast
Coffee and supplies at intake each evening
Safe overnight shelter for up to 35 guests
Connection to resources for Pottstown residents seeking stability
Last winter, there were 103 Code Blue nights — a sobering reminder of how many nights our neighbors faced life-threatening cold. Every time the shelter doors open, it’s because someone in our community needs a warm, safe place to rest.
While we continue working toward our long-term goal of building a 24/7 center, Pottstown Beacon of Hope remains committed to meeting immediate needs and standing beside those who have nowhere else to turn.
Together—with the help of our volunteers, donors, and partner organizations—we’re ensuring that no one has to weather the cold alone.
